How does a Wireless Charger Work?

INTRODUCTION

It has been a long time since we have always carried our mobile phones with us. In fact, it has so much power that by itself it can become our walking office. It is as if we always carry a personal computer with us.

We can use it for many daily and work tasks. It allows us to communicate through calls or messages and applications. Our cellphone also has personal assistants that make life easier for us. It is also a powerful camera, and it can become many other things: a video game console, a library, a book reader, a document editor, a workplace, and much more.

At the same time, since we use it practically all day, the options offered by mobile phones are increasing. More antennas, more software, more screen, more camera, more of everything. Mobile technology is always increasing, and therefore, it also has more battery, to give the necessary power so that the mobile is with us 24 hours a day.

With the evolution and maximization of batteries, new technologies and innovations also emerge. If until now we always charged mobile phones with a cable, for a few years we have another option: wireless charging. Do you want to know how it works?

WIRELESS INDUCTION CHARGING

The dream of science fiction: enter a room and have the mobile charge automatically. At the moment, that is nothing more than a fantasy, although steps are being taken to make it a reality in a few years. For the moment, we have to settle for contact charging. It is wireless, yes, but not at such a distance as to move freely with the mobile charging in our hands.

In reality, wireless charging is, today, an induction charge, in which the phone, very close to the charger, receives electrical impulses that charge its battery. The charger generates an electromagnetic field that emits energy. At the other extreme, that is, in the phone, there is a receiver that captures that energy, and transmits it to the battery, to charge it.

Therefore, the charger becomes an energy emitter, and our mobile phone is the receiver of this energy. But we always have to remember: for the energy transfer to work properly, the emitter and the receiver have to be close together. Normally, with current technology, that means leaving the mobile on top of the charger (yes, with the advantage of not having to connect any cables, we simply leave it on top and it charges).

THE ELECTROMAGNETIC COIL

This miracle of technology works thanks to what is known as an Electromagnetic Coil. Both devices, both the charger and the phone, have an electromagnetic coil. Thus, the electromagnetic energy field generated by the charger coil is received by the electromagnetic coil inside the phone, passing the energy to the battery.

Both devices must detect each other, thereby ensuring that the system is compatible between the charger and the mobile phone. With this we avoid problems of overloading or underutilization of energy. The user does not have to do anything: if the system is compatible, it will load, otherwise, it will not.

THE DIFFERENT STANDARDS

As we have said in the previous paragraph, the technology of the phone has to be compatible with that of the charger. The manufacturer makes sure of that, in this case Wood World, that it will provide you with a charger and also a receiver so that the phone is fully compatible with the wireless charger charging standard.

In any case, you have to be up to date. The two most widely used standards today are PMA and Qi, which coexist hand in hand, always trying to advance to impose themselves. It looks like the future is going to be for Qi technology, but who knows for now.

PMA technology allows larger but less efficient loading surfaces. For example, we can have the phone further away from the charged and continue to charge the battery without any problem.

Instead, the Qi system prioritizes efficiency over charging distance. The battery charging speed is therefore much higher, sacrificing freedom of movement instead. We have to leave the phone practically on the charger so that the battery receives power.

CONCLUSIONS

Wireless charging technology continues to advance today. We do not know if it will lead us to a future of automated loading just by moving around a room, although it seems that that is going to be a bit complicated.

The greater the distance between the charger and the phone, the greater the loss of efficiency and the lower the energy load on the battery. Further research remains to be done, and the future looks very optimistic for this type of energy transfer system. Mobility today is a basic need, and telephones, turned into computers that are an essential part of our lives, ask us for more and more battery.
